Hadrian’s Wall UK 2023
Today was always set up as a difficult one, early in walk, biggest distance, and it’s warm (at least for here!). So much of this mornings walk is on the road which just destroys your feet, particularly in the heat.

We visited the st Michaels church( built around 14th century)

There is a statue of him here as well but most importantly there is a pub at the exact halfway point of the day.
The afternoon just went on and on and on.
After a very pleasant evening last night at the Kings Arms hotel with a chap from mt Tamborine and his dad. Dad is 75 and the chap is doing this for his 50th
He has the most enormous pack as he is carrying his dads gear as well. Strong bugger.
Slowish start next this morning as breaky, full English of course, wasn’t on till 7:30.
Before we left there was a photo with our host, who is so lovely but did like chat.
I think that was the main reason for our late brekky and thus late departure.

We will see a few today, built around 12 century using local material: a Roman wall of course.
Visited the offical start… then it was on.
A lot of the day was spent in farm fields or on a road. Learned the history of king Edward I.
Apparently he didn’t like the scots and was on a campaign but died after a “few months” of dysentery. He was left inside the other st micheals church further along the track at Burgh-By-Sands.
There is a statue of him here as well but most importantly there is a pub at the exact halfway point of the day.
We had a well deserved cold lemonade.
The afternoon just went on and on and on.
Seriously spent/ exhausted walking in the sun.
Finally done, approximately 25k for the first day.
We will sleep well tonight
